How it's calculated
Daily distance (doubled for a round trip) times days per week gives weekly distance, which runs through the same fuel-cost formula used everywhere else on the site:
weekly distance = one-way distance × (2 if round trip) × days per week
yearly cost = weekly cost × 52 · monthly cost = yearly cost ÷ 12
Worked example
The calculator's own defaults: a 14-mile one-way commute, round trip, 5 days a week, at 28 mpg (US) and $3.50/gal.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is the weekly commute cost calculated?
Your one-way distance is doubled if round trip is on, multiplied by the days you commute per week, then run through the same fuel-needed and cost formula as the Fuel Cost Calculator. Monthly is the yearly figure divided by 12 (using a 52-week year), not a flat times-4.33 approximation.
Does this account for weeks I don't commute, like vacation or remote days?
Not directly -- it assumes the days-per-week figure you enter holds for all 52 weeks. If you work from home some weeks or take vacation, lower the days-per-week number to an average across the year for a more realistic yearly figure.
What does the second-vehicle comparison show?
Turn it on and enter a second vehicle's economy in the same unit -- the calculator shows the yearly fuel-cost difference for driving that same commute in that vehicle instead, useful for weighing a more efficient car against your current one for commuting specifically.
Is this just fuel, or does it include parking, tolls and wear on the car?
Fuel only. For tolls on a specific trip, use the Trip Gas Cost Calculator; for a full per-mile figure that adds maintenance and insurance, use the Cost Per Mile Calculator.
